AI and Copyright

There are no shortage of artists fighting against generative AI against their intellectual property. This is the same when it comes to you using generative AI in your academic work for whatever project you use it on (writing, video, visual). Using generative AI as a guide post is one thing but using generative AI as your own work is not the vibe.

AI and Plagiarism

Generative AI can mix and match sources and it is up to you to source accordingly. This is why it is important not to use generative AI as a main source and to use it as a guiding post on your own original work. Doing your own research and finding your own sources makes sure that you are not running into these problems.

AI and Ethics

Just as we had stated in What is AI? What is it Not?, generative AI has its faults. Below are statements we had made previously and with how to use AI responsibly.

Issues:

  • Bias in the AI model
  • Spreading of misinformation or of false information
  • AI model may not protect privacy
  • Property rights are not protected

Ways to Use Responsibly:

  • Verify generated results
  • Being aware and respectful of intellectual property
  • Knowing of and being aware of the potential of AI model bias
  • Knowing how your instructor stands in their course on AI materials
  • Cite AI generated content
